Interview and Leadership Analysis

Interview summary On October 30, 2020, I was privileged to interview Ms. Forester in her office. Ms. Forester is the Director of Clinical Services in a local Nursing home located in Weld County, Colorado. She is a Masters in Geriatric Nursing holder and has a five-year experience in the care of elderly patients following this academic qualification.  I met with her to ask a series of questions about her practice, leadership, research involvement, the challenges faced in practice, and response to these challenges. Some of the questions asked during the interview were the professional journey she went through to reach her current position, what motivations she had to join the profession, the professional organizations to which she is a member and the roles in these organizations, as well as the challenges she faces in her practice. I also asked her what her biggest achievements in the nursing practice are. In the current position, the primary responsibilities she has are to ensure the smooth running of operations, programs, and activities within the nursing home. She also plans, directs, and coordinates a high standard of care services. She also provides professional input on staffing and participating in educational programs in which she provides mentorship to other junior staff and students. Some of her nursing profession’s motivations are the opportunities one has to influence practice through research positively. However, she states that nursing is an emotionally demanding job, especially when caring for elderly patients or minority groups, and requires a great deal of resilience. So far, she has influenced positive changes in quality, safety, and evidence-based standards in the current workstation by advocating for adequate staffing, establishing a nurse emotional support peer program, and improving the working environment. Besides the nursing home’s leadership roles, she is an active member of the Gerontological Society of America.

Analysis of Ms. Forester’s Leadership

Ms. Forester is a transformational leader and a change agent. According to Moon, Van Dam, and Kitsos (2019), transformational leadership is characterized by a leader empowering, motivating, and challenging followers beyond the status quo, which often results in positive organizational performance. Ms. Forester has influenced the improvement of nursing services and the nursing staff’s welfare in the facility. She actively advocates for optimal service delivery as well as fair remuneration of the staff. For instance, she successfully championed additional nursing staff’s employment to reduce the workload by reducing the nurse-patient ratio. This was meant to reduce burnout among nurses and to promote motivation and job satisfaction. As pointed out by Garcia et al. (2019), burnout can negatively influence patients’ quality of care. It can also influence the treatment outcomes of a patient. Through advocacy for proper staffing and initiation of an emotional support peer program for nurses, she demonstrated that she had a deep concern about workers’ welfare in the facility and was committed to improving the working environment. Indirectly, she was also promoting service delivery for patients. Ms. Forester is also an effective communicator in her role. As the Director of Clinical Services, she coordinates services in the nursing home, which is only possible if one has excellent communication skills. These entail effective listening and clarity of messages passed to others. Effective communication is crucial in negotiation, and her advocacy efforts for proper staffing were successful due to good interpersonal communication and relationship with others (McCaffrey & Reinoso, 2017). Besides, Ms. Forester fosters interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary collaboration, which requires excellent communication skills (O’Reilly et al. 2017). She is a member of the Gerontological Society of America, a multidisciplinary organization for healthcare providers. I believe Ms. Forester is qualified to be a doctoral preceptor. She has rich clinical experience in her specialty with experience of five years. She has also been a researcher and advocate for positive change. She is well known and respected in the facility as well as in the surrounding community. She has both formal and informal powers, which enable her to succeed in influencing positive change in the nursing home. She is also well respected among the staff, and she happens to be a mentor to some of the junior nursing staff. She has been involved in multiple interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research projects, and she can guide me during my research project. She can also help me network with other researchers for collaboration in research projects. Being a Director of Clinical Services, one of Ms. Forester’s responsibilities is compiling, analyzing, reporting, and maintaining data concerning the institution’s activities and services. She also deals with budgeting and controls costs in various departments. She has to ensure data integrity and safety by limiting access to non-authorized individuals. As such, she can provide protection and data privacy. She can also provide ethical stewardship and oversight when accessing information that is sensitive to the facility. One of the major challenges Ms. Forester faces and a possible gap to be addressed in the capstone project is the lack of knowledge and expertise in electronic record-keeping among the nursing staff working in the nursing home. Most nurses who are struggling with basic computer skills have challenges using the computerized system for record-keeping. The possible consequences of not using electronic health records are increased medical errors, inefficiency, and negative patient outcomes (Kruse et al. 2018). This is an organizational problem, and some of the recommended interventions include rolling out an educational program that teaches basic computer skills. This approach can have a long-term positive impact on service delivery and patient satisfaction. It will also reduce the cost of record keeping.

  • Discussion Questions (DQ)

Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, including a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words. Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source. One or two-sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words. I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.

  • Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately. In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies. Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work). Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.

  • APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with the APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required). Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation. I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

  • Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage over-utilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Master’s level and deduct points accordingly. As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content. It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source. • LopesWrite Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to Lopes Write, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me. Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes. Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own? Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in Loud-cloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.

  • Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is a 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies. Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances. If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect. I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension. As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.

  • Communication

Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me: Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class. Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
