The chosen health problem: heart disease
Heart disease refers to a range of conditions that affect the heart’s structure and function, leading to various cardiovascular problems. In the United States and around the world, it poses a serious health risk. Heart disease includes illnesses including heart attacks, heart failure, irregular heartbeats, and faulty heart valves. Chest discomfort, shortness of breath, dizziness, and irregular heartbeat are all possible side effects of these diseases. High blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, diabetes, and inactivity are all major contributors to the development of cardiovascular disease. A person’s vulnerability to heart disease might also be affected by their age, gender, and family history.- In Highly developed societies, the influence of the natural environment is moderated by the physical characteristics of the social environment such as the built environment and pollution as well as by the socioeconomic status and social networks (Bhatnagar, 2017 & Bhatnagar et al., 2016).

- In the United States, coronary heart disease is the leading cause of mortality each year, taking the lives of approximately 697,000 Americans.
- The most common kind of heart disease, known as coronary heart disease (CHD), is responsible for the deaths of around 382,820 people per year.
- About 805,000 people in the United States have heart attacks each year. There are 605,000 persons whose heart attacks are their very first, and there are 200,000 heart attacks that occur in those who have already experienced one.
Environmental and Epidemiological Determinants
- These environmental and epidemiological issues are significant determinants the prevalence of heart diseases in USA population.
- The environmental factors such as quality of air, water, pollution and other environmental changes plays a significant role in determining the risk and prevalence of heart diseases.
- There are some environmental factors that have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease. Researchers have shown a correlation between a higher frequency of heart disease and factors such as air pollution, exposure to secondhand smoke, living in locations with limited access to green spaces, and the availability of healthy dietary options (Glovaci, et al., 2019).
- Similarly, epidemiological factors such as age, genders and socioeconomic status also plays a significant role in explaining how the prevalence of heart diseases is increasing.
- The development of heart disease is considerably aided by decisions made throughout life that are detrimental to one’s health. These include inactivity in physical activity, bad eating habits (including a high intake of saturated fats, cholesterol, and sodium), smoking, drinking too much alcohol, and being overweight or obese. Heart disease is more prevalent in regions that have greater prevalence rates of the aforementioned habits (White, 2020)
